I read today the reason why we listen to prophets. This passage spells it out pretty plain. Originally God spoke to His people out of the mountain. They couldn’t handle it, and told God to speak through Moses, God said “They have well spoken that which they have spoken” (verse 17). So God said He would speak through a prophet. (verse 18) Those things which the prophet speaks in His name God will require of us. (verse 19)

I know some may say that this applies to Jesus alone…but did it not apply to Moses? If you didn’t believe Noah in his day what happened to you? You did the backstroke! If the Ninevites didn’t listen to Jonah they would have been blown off the map. So you can see that if God sends a prophet, it’s a good idea to listen to him.

The 1 caveat here as listed in scripture is that if he speaks, and it doesn’t happen, don’t listen to him. (verse 22). See the second passage from Deuteronomy 13. We find here if a prophet come and has a sign, but it doesn’t agree with the Word previously given…then don’t listen to him. It’s really rather simple if you think about it logically. For some reason people just think all this is for a day gone by.

Paul said: “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.”

Paul was after Jesus, and if you were preaching something other than what Paul was preaching…you missed something. This isn’t even venturing into Malachi 4:5,6 or Revelations 10:7 or a host of other scriptures we could bring up.

DEUTERONOMY 18:15 – 22
15 ¶ The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
16 According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
17 And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
18 I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.
19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
20 But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?
22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.

DEUTERONOMY 13:1 – 4
1 ¶ If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder,
2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them;
3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
4 Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.
